Graphing Points on the Coordinate Plane

Two number lines that intersect at right angles form a coordinate plane.

The horizontal axis is the x-axis and the vertical axis is the y-axis.  The axes intersect at the origin and divide the coordinate plane into four sections called quadrants.

An ordered pair of numbers identifies the location of a point. These numbers are the coordinates of the point on the graph. Point B has coordinates (2, 4).

The x-coordinate tells you how far to move right (positive) or left (negative) from the origin. The y-coordinate tells you how far to move up (positive) or down (negative) from the origin. The origin is the point (0,0).

 Identifying Coordinates

Name the coordinates of point Z in the graph.

 Example 1

The coordinates of Z are (2, 3).

Graphing Points

Graph the point A(3, 4) on the coordinate plane.

 Example 2

Coordinate Plane Quadrants
There are four quadrants in a coordinate plane.

Graph these coordinates.                               Name which coordinate these points are in.
1) (2,3)                                                            1) (-5, -6)
2) (-4,-5)                                                        2) (3 , 8)
3) (3, -4)                                                         3) (-4 , 1)
4) (-6, 8)                                                         4) (2, -9)
5) (0,0)                                                            5) (0 , 0 )
