Section 3 - Solving Trig Equations

Page history last edited by Fouss 1 yr ago

Ex. Solve.    2sinx-1=0         *solve for trig expression.

                   2sinx=1            *solve for x

                   sinx=1/2

                   To Graph: Find the quadrants in which sine is positive.

                                   Apply appropriate triangles and label.

                                   Find reference angles.

                   x=Ï€/6, 5Ï€/6

Ex. Solve.       3tan²x-1=0

                      tan²x=1/3

                      tan²x=1/√3 and - 1/√3    <----- when it is plus or minus the answers are in all 4 quadrants

                      X= Ï€/6, 5Ï€/6, 7Ï€/6, and 11Ï€/6

Ex. Solve.      2sin²x-sinx-1=o       <--------- The same as factoring a quadratic.  This equation is the same as 2x²-x-1.

                     (2sinx+1) (sinx-1)=0

                     2sinx+1=0  sin-1=0

                     sinx=1, and -1/2      <--------- When they equal 1, -1, or 0 you have to plot the point

                      x= 7Ï€/6, 11Ï€/6, and Ï€/2
