6.2 Slope - Intercept Form
linear equation: equation whose graph is a line
y = 2x + 5 <---Linear equation
y = 2 <---Not a Linear equation. A linear equation cannot contain exponents, square roots, or absolute values.
slope - intercept form: y = mx + b
m=slope
b=y-intercept
Example: Identifying Slope and y-intercept
Find The slope and y-intercept of the line: y = 3x - 5
Think of y = 3x - 5 as y = 3x + (-5)
Slope = 3; y-intercept = -5
Example: Writing an Equation
Write an equation of the line with a slope 3 and y-intercpet 6
8
y = mx + b Use slope-intercept form
y = 3x + 6 Substitute 3 for m and 6 for y
