6.1 Slope and Rate of Change

slope: the "steepness" of a line

formula for slope:

m=eq=\frac{y_2 -y_1}{x_2-x_1}

Example:

Find the slope of points (2,3),(-2,-4)

eq=\frac{-4-3 }{-2-2}    = m Plug your points into the slope formula.
eq=\frac{-7}{-4}  Subtract the numbers.

eq=\frac{7}{4} = m (slope)

Rate of change: comparison of two changing rates

rate of change formula: change in dependent variable(y)

                                      change in independent variable(x)

Example:

Number of Days       Price

            1                  $60

                                       ) 15

            2                  $75

                                       ) 15

            3                  $90

Find rate of change:  eq=\frac{15}{1} = 15
